Pennbrook Farm

May 2003

Now that the snow and ice have finally melted and Spring is in the air, we are anxious to enjoy our property. The prior owner/caretaker had a fairly large garden behind the house. However, given his physical limitations, not much garden maintenance was done. We really want to grow vegetables this year, so we proceeded to pull the overgrown weeds, leftover dead plants and other flora that was populating the garden. We then roto-tilled and raked the beautiful, dark topsoil that we have. This is such a treat for us, as our prior house had a yard that was nothing but clay and rock. Between the poor soil and dense woods, we could not grow anything outside of a container on the deck. Now we were planting tomatoes, pumpkins, cucumbers, squash, onions, green beans and herbs. We have our first garden in 13 years! We added a little white picket fence around it, more for the look than any real attempt to keep the critters out. It looks great.

We are also having a lot of rain, a continuation of the wet and snowy winter that just passed. This results in the large lawn area we have growing very rapidly. It takes 2-3 hours to mow all of the lawn area using both a 42" riding mower and a walk behind mower for the smaller areas around the house. The boys are not quite big enough yet to run the big tractor, but they do the smaller part with the walk-behind mower. We have motivation to get the yard in as good a shape as we can, since we are having a big party in June for Billy's First Holy Communion. We are really excited to have everyone out to the farm for the party on this very important day.

Below are some pictures of the boys and a friend helping to tackle the jungle of weeds.
